Does it drive you crazy when you are typing something on your laptop, and the cursor changes its position, most importantly breaking your concentration? Well, this occurs when you are in the full flow of typing on the keyboard, and you accidentally brush your palm or fingers across the touchpad, which causes the cursor to stray. This was bothering me for a long time, until recently when I decided to get rid of this issue which was hampering my productivity.

OK – when I’m working, instead of using the touchpad, I prefer a mouse with my laptop, so it’s nearly of no use to me, especially when I’m typing. Therefore, it is best to disable the touchpad of your laptop. Here are a few ways how you can disable laptop touchpad in Windows:
1. Disable Laptop Touchpad via Control Panel
This option applies to users not using the touchpad at all, as this way they can disable it once and for all. For users who are just looking to disable it while typing, can use the freeware discussed below.
Go to Mouse Properties via Control Panel.
As seen in the screenshot, there is an option of Touchpad, from where you can simply turn off the touchpad and Save. Body slider workout.
If you do not see this option in the Mouse Properties menu, it could only mean that you do not have the touchpad driver installed on your laptop.
At first, I did not see it either and downloaded the Synaptics Touchpad Driver from Dell.com. (I’m using Dell Inspiron 15), which totally solved my purpose. After installing the driver, I could access the option of disabling the touchpad from the tray icon and also through the shortcut from my keyboard – Fn + F3 (which was not working until I installed the driver). Therefore, I would suggest you visit your respective vendor’s website and download the touchpad driver for a permanent solution.
2. Disable Laptop Touchpad via Device Manager
In case you do not find the driver, there is yet another option to disable your touchpad is through the Device Manager, but FYI, it only gives you the option to uninstall the driver, so make sure you keep a backup first and then go for it.
3. Disable Laptop Touchpad via Freeware
This solution applies to those of you, who do not use a mouse and just need a temporary solution to disable the touchpad only while typing.

The touchpad on a laptop is a convenience as well as a hindrance to most of us in the laptop community. There are days where we can’t live without a touch pad and there are days we wished it wasn’t there to begin with. This tutorial will show you how to disable the touchpad on your Windows 7 laptop.
1. Depending on the make and model of your laptop, there should be a button or a shortcut or hotkey you can access in order to turn off the touch pad.
For HP laptop’s you can see a small dot to the top left corner of the touchpad. Tapping twice on it will bring up an LED and that indicates that the touchpad is disabled. Double tapping on the dot will enable the touch pad. If you don’t see a dot, you will see a small rounded edge rectangle which is the tap area for enabling/disabling the touchpad.
For Dell laptop’s you can use the FN key plus the key stated on your function row to disable the touchpad. The key will look something like this:
For Toshiba, Asus and Lenovo you will gain access to touchpad enabling /disabling via the same FN + Function key or the top most keys on your onboard keyboard similar to Dell’s approach.
2. You can also use the app that comes bundled during driver installation for your respective laptop models. Commonly used is Synaptics though you can also find Alps, Elantech and Cypress on other laptop’s make and models.
3. Head down to Control Panel>Hardware and Sound (if viewing by category).
4. Listed under Devices and Printer, you should see Mouse. Click on it.
5. On the very end or the first tab you should see options for the touchpad.
6. Select the device and disable it. If on a laptop equipped with Synaptics touchpad or HP’s touchpad can be found on the first tab with a checkbox for Enabling Touch Pad. Remove the check.
7. Click on Apply and on OK.
8. Your touchpad should be disabled as soon as you click on Apply.
If you want to enable the touchpad, all you’ll need to do is reverse the steps you took to disable it in the first place.
Hopefully you’ve disabled the touchpad for your laptop running on Windows 7.
Hello everyone,
My laptop's touchpad works and I don't want it to, because I prefer a mouse. It's a Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series on windows 10 OS.
What I have tried that hasn't worked:
- start<settings<devices<mouse & touchpad<additional mouse options. This opens a window called Mouse Options which has 5 tabs up top, none of which involve the touchpad. The Hardware tab shows 2 devices: the mouse itself, and the USB. No touchpad there.
- windows key+x<mobility center. No touchpad to be found.
- various function keys. No options for touchpad on/off.
- device manager<mice and other pointing devices. Again, only the mouse and usb show up. It appears the touchpad is working without a driver, which is a little spooky.
Any other suggestions? I could try downloading a third party driver, but that seems like a step in the wrong direction.
Thanks
